In a battle spanning 25 years and two states, one woman still pursues back payments she says are owed to her for the care of her children. The father allegedly owes more than $100k in back child support, according to Florida records. Although the children are now older, the mother still hopes to retrieve the money to send the children to college.
In an interview with the media, the woman shared her records — letters, certified mailings and court motions — in order to demonstrate the grueling experience she has gone through to attempt to retrieve payments that have never regularly arrived. She reports an occasional payment, sometimes as low as $3 for an entire month. The man has faced loss of his license, probation and may even face jail time for the significant back payment owed.
It is a federal crime to avoid paying child support for children residing in another state for longer than 12 months. In the woman’s case, she has found that contacting the child support office may spark a short series of payments, only to have them taper off again. State records show that the man is one of 2,800 parents owing more than $100,000.
The woman still hopes to reclaim some of the missed payments and continues to utilize the legal system for help. The payments, which could have gone toward the children’s basic needs, will now hopefully go to easing the college financial burden. Some individuals in Florida find that they need help in recovering back child support payments. Many choose to use the services of an attorney for help in doing so.
